Abstrakt
At midday on 12 March 2025, a moose was observed in the Komańcza Forest District in south-eastern Poland, near the border between the Low Beskids and the Bieszczady Mountains (Fig 1.). The aim of this paper is to report the discovery of a moose in a previously unknown location, in region where moose are rarely seen. This is an indication of the continuous expansion of the population of this species and its colonisation of new regions in Poland. It also shows that mountainous regions can also be an attractive habitat for this species, probably due to climate change. This raises further questions about possible implications, including the risk of collisions with vehicles in an increasingly larger area of the country, interactions with natural predators, damage to forestry and further dynamics of population development in the context of changes in the attractiveness of habitats. As this species is adapted to a colder climate and the changing thermal conditions in the mountain regions appear to be more favourable for it, further colonisation of the mountain regions in Poland by moose can be expected in conjunction with the decreasing average snow cover.
